Biiig Push August 19, 2008 (2:33pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #146
Hello, everyone! I'm at Kalahari. The wired is free, haven't checked for wireless (don't care).
I've just pushed from 97 to 115 - lot's of updates here, and I'll try and get them all up on O-G ASAP (gonna scp a tarbell and copy things over).

First off, we have topic sinking: Fairly simple, it's the exact opposite of stickying.
Second, something small: An icon overhaul. Buttons now have 16x16 icons, assigned in 'icons.php' - this will be more theme-y when I get to it. You'll also notice some changes to how "emblems" work on topics (new/poll/sticky/etc) - I'm using the piece of paper as a background image and slapping 24x24 icons on top. Looks quite nice.
Third, something I said I'd have a while ago but never got to - splitting topics! Moderators can now split posts off of a topic and into a new one. The mod who does the split will be the "author" of the new topic, but that doesn't really mean much.

Fixed a ton of bugs as well. The installer should be ready for beta 2. I'm also getting some work done on the image gallery, but that's probably going to take a bit of time. The one in trunk is completely empty, just a template page.

Anyway, I'm going to work on getting things up on O-G, but it may take a bit of time. I come home tomorrow!

e: We're up! Decided to FTP things over and then just cp them into place.

Quick Edit and More! August 14, 2008 (12:04pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #145
Just a brief notice. I've added some awesome new features to PHPwnage:
First is "Quick Edit", which, like on any other forum with such a feature, allows you to edit your post from within the topic view. Just press "Quick Edit" on a Javascript-enabled browser, and edit your post.

The other new feature is actually two buttons on PwnBuddy: The ^ and X buttons shade and close PwnBuddy, respectively (shade means "shrink to just the title bar", it's a window management term not found in the Windows world). Both of these only take effect for the current page, and any call to buddyAlert() will show and unshade PwnBuddy.
Later, you'll be able to completely disable PwnBuddy, but not until I've added exceptions in for the the IP and Delete buttons on the forum (they use buddyAlert to give messages and prompts to moderators).

e: 1.8b2 will be released as soon as I fix up Aeolus, which won't be for a while as I'll be on vacation. Sorry about that. Maybe I'll get some work done while I'm away?
e: Aeolus has been fixed up enough that it works, but I'm not going to release anything official yet. Just grab a copy of trunk if you're so impatient that you can't wait for me to finish this.

Mmm... Themes... August 13, 2008 (6:05pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #144
Go check out OGU and use the "crystal2" theme. I'm working on making major modifications to the forum that make it completely themeable. There are also some structural changes.

Discuss this news post here.

Notice: The changes have been applied to OG. Any theme other than Crystal may look a bit odd for the time being. Aeolus and Crystal are the only officially supported themes, so only Aeolus will be updated to fit the new set up. Please, stop using the other themes in a serious manner. I want to completely remove them any way.
e: Decided to do just that. The other themes are gone. You have two choices, pick one.

PHPwnage to Utilize reCAPTCHA August 13, 2008 (10:37am EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #143
We'll soon be adding some much needed security improvements to PHPwnage, all to be available in 1.8b2 for your enjoyment.
First off, we're adding optional (but recommended) reCAPTCHA support. Your public and private key pair will be stored in MySQL. This will not be the default because you will have to have this information to use it. These new options will appear under "Bans" which will be renamed "Security". Site log information will also be moved here for uniformity.
The other improvement is also a CAPTCHA - we'll be pimping the current one to support some new modes. First is the standard, what you see right now. We'll be making it "worth using". Second is one that I implemented a while ago on OGU that involves a not-always-included gd font function combined with a really scratchy and hard to read font. These will be selectable options, but the latter will fall back if the function is not already defined.

The last bit of extra security involves guest posting. Guest posts will no longer break things, as they do now, and will require a captcha phrase to be entered.
I also plan on letting guests enter a guest name, but I have yet to work out the details.

e: ReCAPTCHA has been integrated and is currently in use here on Oasis-Games.com.

Glad I got That Worked Out August 10, 2008 (5:07pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #142
Windows just refuses to accept the existence of my Intel card. This is good. It means it won't be interfering with the nVidia card.
Linux is gladly ignoring my nVidia card. This is good. It means it won't be interfering with the Intel card.

I still need to switch the VGA cable when I switch OSes. Doesn't matter to me, though, it's a quick switch.
Funny: I'm using the Ubuntu Hardy default wallpaper on Windows right now. Had to crop it myself, though. This is to keep them both the same until the time comes when I get a complete wallpaper set for all of my machines (because the one I use on my laptop is NSFWoM). Now if only I could replicate my dark Murrine theme on Windows... Clearlooks will have to do.

Anyway, here's the deal: Tonight (like, in two or three hours) I'm going to restore my back ups and get Halo CE installed on Windows. Should be a fairly simple task. Either later tonight or tomorrow morning I'll be reseting the connection key for my 360. If all goes well, tomorrow afternoon you'll be seeing a new Kaos video, or the MAIR in Contour. Or both.

More on AS under Ubuntu: All is well. Everything is working fine. Still working on the audio drivers in Windows, though (I removed my Audigy. It has caused nothing but pain). Hopefully I'll get that fixed up. Can't stand system beeps (which is why on Linux I have them all disabled through Compiz and redirected to something more appropriate: Shaking windows). It should be a simple Intel HDA setup... Meh, I'll get to it in time.

Basically, my set up, though built from spare parts, is now officially awesome.

*Stupid Stupid Stupid Stupid* August 10, 2008 (12:03am EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #141
  Today I was bored.
Today I pulled the GeForce FX 5200 out of ApacheServer.
Today I burned an Intrepid Alpha 3 CD.
Today I ****ing stabbed myself in the chest with a Wacom battery-less pen for being such a ****ing dumb*** and not noticing the cause of all of my problems.
Today I laughed as Ubuntu attempted to spew the welcome jingle through my "pc speaker" (bug in Intrepid's default set up).
Today I nuked OpenSolaris.

-- Actual News Story / Blog Post --
Guess what? The problem with AS is not the motherboard. It's the fact that I have my primary graphics device set as being my GeForce FX card. Agpgart doesn't like that. At all. It wants my integrated intel card, which I don't even use on... anything, to be the default. It will crash my goddamn kernel if it doesn't get what it wants. This is actually unfortunate in a way, as the other possibility was my Audigy causing the problems (which I'm ditching anyway, so I can have a reliable audio output system), however, it is good that I can run Linux on the machine. I guess I have a five-page bug report to file for the agpgart module, though, as this shouldn't be happening. I'm installing Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 3 as I type this. I figure it'll be a good place to start, I already use it quite effectively on my laptop. I'm wiping the extended Solaris partition. I'll take a 2GB swap. Server files will remain on my NTFS partition. Should be a fairly simple process. The only problem here is how to manage my nVidia card. Windows will want to use it, but will it work properly when I have it set like this? Ug...

Well, regardless, this means all of my pain and misery has been meaningless. ApacheServer will join the rest of my Linux-powered machines. It will keep its Windows XP installation, with all of its goodies. The server will once again run, I'll have another Compiz development area (nVidia or Intel? That is the question.). All will be well with the world.

I guess since I'm finally able to ditch it, I can list some things I didn't like about OpenSolaris:
1. It's slow. Seriously. Get your x86 optimizations fixed up, or go back to sparc.
2. It's old. Everything is outdated. GNOME 2.20? Compiz 0.5.0? X.org 7.1? Gah!
3. The package manager sucks. Steal from the Linux world, guys. We have plenty to give.
4. You can't even read my NTFS partition? I have to get extra tools just for that? And there aren't any for writing? -censored- it.

e: Scratch using Intrepid, I'm taking the safe route and going with my Hardy+1 CD...

Yay OpenSolaris! August 4, 2008 (5:35pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #140
  WARNING: Blog post follows.

So I have this machine. You may know it as "ApacheServer". It runs Windows XP. It refuses to run any form of Linux.

So I go to thinking "I'll have to find something else". I wanted to try FreeBSD first, but they have no single DVD or CD that does it all. Lazy -censored-.
Today I said "Hmm.. let's try OpenSolaris". Downloaded the ISO, burned it, stuck it in, booted it up... waited a while... and waited some more. X started. Waited some more.
God this thing is slow at the moment... Ahh, finally, I'm logged in...
And a bit later, Firefox was running. It's slow as **** off this DVD, but I think I know why - it keeps polling my integrated Intel graphics chipset (which is borked!). With the close connection to the kernel that a graphics chipset has, I'm sure that's my problem. I'll block the required drivers/modules/whatever-they-are-in-Solaris when I get the chance.

Cool stuff: It comes with the nVidia drivers. Awesome. They also work.
It also recognized my Wacom tablet far better than Ubuntu's default configuration, but not quite what I want (hello guys: it should default to absolute!).
Compiz runs. Awesome.
And now things are a bit faster. Good.
They're still running a 0.6 series of Compiz... They don't have my patches or the various other awesomenesses of the 0.7 series.

Trying to get networking working (it's not. And I have a wired network). I'll update this later.

e: It doesn't come with the driver for my BCM4401 wired NIC. Well, we'll have to find that!
Same goes for my Creative sound card (my internal is disabled atm, but I may turn it back on just for this, why waste time the time with the Audigy?)

I'm going to get this driver onto my USB stick so I can use my NIC. Meh, I'll do it later.

Turns out I can't resize my NTFS partition. Drat. Back to Windows for the moment?

e: Reformatted from my other Ubuntu machine with GParted. I'm booting into Windows to make sure everything is peachy, then it'll be back to the OpenSolaris Live CD for an install.

It is spreading!!! August 4, 2008 (4:23pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #139
Sorry about the site being down this morning. Road Runner was having problems throughout my area. Good thing I got everything up on Launchpad, though.

Apparently PHPwnage is spreading through the various random download sites at the moment. I've spotted it on Softpedia already! Huzzah. Hope I didn't leave any major bugs in the beta (only one I know of I fixed quite speedily before leaving it be - if you happen to have a bugged quote button on the forum, you were really quick with your download, 'cause I fixed it in like 20 minutes or something, just re-download and copy over forum.php, sorry about that).

So, yeah, keep it up, having something people may actually use is pretty cool.

Plans for the next beta release (1.8b2) include:
1. Move all time/date related materials over to a method that allows me to easily set a time zone.
2. Add timezone setting to profile
3. Fix up code formatting on the display sections for the admin panel
4. Fix up a few of the old themes so that they work (even though they suck)

A few long-run updates to be ready for when the final comes out (hopefully by the end of the year, lol):
* Image Gallery - I'm still working on it
* True theme-side HTML formatting (which will, btw, fix the "Aero" theme's most obvious problem)
* Significantly improved forum formatting (or in other words: It'll look more like a real forum and less like something that was just thrown in)
* Moderator tools - Split threads, move posts, bulk moderation, and more (need to fix some formatting first to add the tools)
* Guest posting fixes - This is a small feature but a big task. The way I handle guest posting right now needs some changes.
* WYSIWYG editor? - I'm not sure. I have to look at things 'cause I honestly have no clue what I'm doing here. We'll see.

  1.8 Beta 1 Release August 3, 2008 (3:44pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #138
I'm releasing the beta of PHPwnage 1.8. This beta includes nearly complete XHTML compliance, improved theme support, much better internal code handling, a lot more.

forum imageDownload from Launchpad.
forum imageDownload from Oasis-Games.com.

Read the release notes.

This is a stable beta, meaning it's just lacking a massive number of features we want to get in before the real 1.8 release. Consider it "1.7.99" or something of the sort.
