Ouch. November 18, 2008 (4:13pm EST), Posted by klange; Article #189
My (Internet) connection just dropped for the most part. While I may have been using a lot of bandwidth over the past month (23GB down, 17GB up in October, including only days after I installed dd-wrt; 12GB down, 8GB up so far this month), I have no caps. Also, the sudden drop, yet still-kind-of-connected-ness as shown here while pinging Google:
Code:
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=140 ttl=238 time=39.7 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=142 ttl=238 time=128 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=152 ttl=238 time=155 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=155 ttl=238 time=47.3 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=156 ttl=238 time=36.7 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=161 ttl=238 time=50.3 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=169 ttl=238 time=415 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=172 ttl=238 time=159 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=179 ttl=238 time=184 ms

Leads me to one conclusion: weather. O-G is in Ohio, and when the weather gets crappy, it gets crappy.

Well, you'll know when we're back up. In the meantime, guess I can't work on my Common App...

e: Yep, things are going in and out. Had it for a few minutes. Saw BTGII come online, now things are going right back down the hole.

Welcome to LangeNET November 10, 2008 (3:31pm EST), Posted by klange; Article #188
As you may know, the server on which Oasis-Games.com is hosted does a lot more than run Oasis-Games.com - it also manages my personal email, does an assortment of O-G related sites, runs a few non-OG sites (just added one today, actually) and provides hosting for our team's personal projects. With that in mind, we've made the decision of changing our all-purpose name to reflect something more professional. Being my server - and for the most part, my domains (with a few exceptions that I'm working on) the new service has been named for myself. We are now "LangeNET" - the name my router has been going by for a while now - and while I don't plan on buying any fancy domains to support this name, you will see it on 404, 500, and the complete "server is down" pages in the form of a few limited logos (basically just some fancy text) and other references.

This really means nothing to you, but I felt I should announce it anyway.
Bye!

Just posting to get a new post at the top.
I randomly decided to install Fedora 10 (preview) on my extra partition today.
GL is slow, but unlike Ubuntu right-this-minute, Fedora isn't screeching to a halt after an hour of use.
Have yet to do anything fancy, just set it up with the same theme I use elsewhere and messed with font configurations.

Anyway, Entropy... Yeah... We'll get to it. Eventually. Let's just leave it with "we'll take considerably less time than Duke Nukem Forever did".

Barack Obama wins! November 4, 2008 (11:16pm EST), Posted by TJ; Article #186
Moments ago, it was announced by a depressed Fox news, a happy CNN, and many other news channels that Barack Obama has made history by being the first African American to become the next President of the United States of America!

We are hiring! November 2, 2008 (2:08pm EST), Posted by Jarocks; Article #185
As part of our ongoing attempts to actually build up a sound staff team here, I thought it would be appropriate to announce that we still require a great deal of staff here at Oasis-Games so without further delay I present the OG Staff Search. Cue applause.

Available Staff Positions:
Coding Team (3)
Individuals applying this should have a sound foundation in a few major coding languages.

3d Modeling Team (2)
Looking for people who have a strong background with 3d modeling software (3dsmax, blender, gmax, etc) and feel that they are fairly good at modeling and/or texturing/uvwmapping.

Art Team (6)

This would involve primarily concept art, and requires individuals who can draw in detail which would be beneficial to our modelers. In laymen terms if you're a good doodler/sketcher/artist, this is the place to apply. This also includes computer made art not graphic design.

Graphic Design (4)

Community Forums Staff (9)
-Global Moderators (4)
-Advertising Staff (3)
-Admin (2)

How to Apply
PM me or one of the other Admin or reply to this thread with an application or resume, it's that easy.
-Please Submit A relevant sample or credentials or your application will not be able to be processed.

Submit Applications here.

Hmm... October 31, 2008 (2:09pm EDT), Posted by klange; Article #184
Server's been fluctuating recently between being completely frozen with Apache processes and being nice and quick - no idea what the problem is, just making note. I'll look into it.

We've been low on news recently. I did in fact return from my trek to visit MIT many days ago, but I'm not done writing my post for OGU.
Again, yes, we are low on news because not much is happening. I've been busy, and some things have come up that are delaying work.
We'll get back into the swing of things sometime in November, when I should have already had my college applications in (still writing essays...)

We're not dead, we're just sleeping.

MIT Trek: Day 0 October 14, 2008 (10:24pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #182
This is "Day 0", or the first night, of my MIT trek. I'm at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island - free wifi (and it's fast!) and I get a public IP. Visit my laptop tonight (within the next few hours, assuming I don't leave any time soon, we may order out, we may head over to Applebee's): 12.50.125.159 is me, at the moment. Tomorrow morning we're headed up to Cambridge to take a tour of MIT. We'll be at a few different hotels during our trek, so the information above will definitely change. More information will be posted on OG:U when available.
  DD-WRT October 6, 2008 (7:17pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #181
Well, after what just happened, I felt it's about time I give DD-WRT a go. Unlike OpenWRT, DD-WRT is based on the original Linksys firmware, so it's a lot more stable and easy to use. Just downloaded the firmware, uploaded it to the router, and it works! Quite nicely, actually. Didn't even need to touch my configurations, it's all set up and working.

So, yeah, you're now completely free of proprietary code the minute you hit my modem. Enjoy.

We now return to our previously scheduled programming... October 6, 2008 (3:38pm EDT), Posted by Bacon; Article #180
  Three years.
That has to be a record.
For three years I have had the IP address "76.189.178.118" through my ISP's DHCP. It was first switched to this when Adelphia split and my services changed over to Time Warner. Now, Time Warner has changed its IP scheme, and 76.189.178.118 is no more. With this, all services provided by OG are switching to a dynamic update system (provided by the same DNS we've been using, as I don't have access to the records). You probably won't see this for another 24 hours, though, as the caches need to update.

But really, three years has to be a record of some sort for a dynamic IP to remain the same - and through power outages, no less.
See you all in a bit.
